Who We Are

The Bakenye fishermen community of Uganda is a resilient tribe deeply rooted in the country's rich cultural tapestry. Originating from the Buganda central region in the 1780s, they have weathered numerous challenges while steadfastly preserving their unique cultural identity and way of life.

The Bakenye, a Bantu tribe situated in Uganda, primarily engages in fishing as their main economic activity. Despite their humble origins, they have demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, forging ahead to uphold their traditions and heritage.

At the helm of our community stands Prince Mr. Iga Musisi J, a revered leader and advocate for justice and development. His unwavering commitment to our people encompasses legal advocacy, cultural preservation, education, and economic empowerment, serving as a guiding light towards a brighter future.

Under Prince Mr. Iga Musisi J's leadership, the Bakenye community has witnessed remarkable progress in various facets of life. Access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities has significantly improved, driven by his vision for sustainable development and prosperity.

However, our journey has not been without its challenges. The Bakenye people have faced adversity, particularly during the tumultuous years of the 1970s and 1980s. Forced to flee conflict, many sought refuge near water bodies such as Lake Victoria, Lake Kyoga, and the River Nile, where they predominantly reside today.

Despite their resilience, the Bakenye community has encountered obstacles, including a lack of representation in leadership roles. It was only recently that Prince Musisi Jackson was elected as their first leader, marking a significant milestone in advocating for their rights and interests.

Nevertheless, much work lies ahead. The Bakenye people require support to overcome these challenges and build a prosperous future for themselves and future generations. Your contribution can make a meaningful impact by supporting initiatives in economic development, education, healthcare, and community empowerment.

Additionally, the government has introduced new regulations governing fishing activities on lakes, including requirements for standard boats and fishing nets. However, these regulations pose financial burdens for the poverty-stricken Bakenye, pushing some to resort to illegal means of accessing resources. This often leads to confrontations with law enforcement, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

Our Mission

The mission of our initiative is to empower the Bakenye community of Uganda, embodying values of leadership, compassion, and global solidarity. We advocate for justice, culture, education, and economic development. Together, we strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the Bakenye people and inspire positive change worldwide.
